There was a time when photography was captured on film. You had no way of knowing exactly what you had created until the film was processed and developed. Because of that, photographers spent countless hours learning how to make the perfect exposure, master the art of composition, and find—or create—the perfect light.

That knowledge was essential. With only 10 or 20 exposures on a roll of film, you didn’t have unlimited chances to get it right. You had to strive to get it perfect. Then came the digital era. Suddenly, millions of people had cameras in their hands, often without the training photographers once considered fundamental. They could raise the camera, point it in the right direction, take a picture, look at the screen, and keep trying until something appeared to work.

But taking more pictures is not the same as having the knowledge to create one exceptional image.

I was fortunate to develop my passion for photography long before the digital era. I studied the craft seriously and worked hard to understand every element that goes into creating a truly beautiful photograph. I was even more fortunate to have two incredible teachers: my father and my brother. Both earned the prestigious Master of Photography degree from the Professional Photographers of America. It was not a title they gave themselves—it was earned through years of education, dedication, and excellence.

Because of their guidance, our family went on to become award-winning photographers who continually worked to excel in our craft.

Sadly, our father is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on through my brother John—www.jmarionphoto.com—and me. We still create photographs in the tradition of the Masters. We understand that a portrait is more than a picture. It becomes part of a family’s history and may be treasured for generations.
